The Raval

The Raval was the city's hospital-and-slum quarter and is now its most eclectic: MACBA's skaters, old-man bars one street from Pakistani eateries, and the Rambla del Raval with Botero's fat cat.

Culture with an edge

MACBA and the CCCB anchor one end, the Liceu opera sits at the other, and between them the city's best art bookshops and record stores. Density of everything, per square meter.

Eating the world

The Raval runs from century-old granjas to some of the city's most interesting young kitchens, via Pakistani, Filipino and Middle Eastern counters. Walk hungry and share.

Street sense

It is central, alive and completely walkable by day; like any dense city quarter it rewards ordinary street sense after dark. The Sant Pau and Hospital Clínic edges are the calm side.
