The Eixample

The Eixample is the orderly Barcelona of the nineteenth century: the chamfered blocks, Passeig de Gràcia's modernist facades and the residential calm that carries the whole city's weight.

The golden square

The quadrant between the Diagonal, Aragó and the two Gaudí avenues concentrates the modernist facades visitors cross the city for. Look up: the second floors, not the ground floors, hold the riches.

Living grid

Inside the blocks, courtyard lives that tourists never see: markets, neighborhood cafés and the interior balconies that explain how the city actually lives. The Dreta and Esquerra halves have different prices and the same bones.

The Sagrada Família's backyard

The temple rises in the Eixample's grid, and the best photographs are not from its forecourt but from the squares two blocks away, where the towers align with the chamfered street corners.
